Which Dermalogica Toner Should I Choose?

Choosing the right Dermalogica toner depends on what your skin needs after cleansing. While each of these facial mists adds hydration and prepares the skin for the next steps in your routine, there are important differences. Some are better suited to everyday hydration, while others focus more closely on sensitivity, dehydration, fine lines or loss of firmness.

This guide has been written by Alexandra Echeverri, Skin Therapist and Dermalogica Expert at John And Ginger, drawing on over 30 years of hands-on treatment room experience to help you compare the different formulas and choose the one most suited to your skin.

Dermalogica toners at a glance

  • Multi-Active Toner: a good all-round choice for lightweight daily hydration and freshness.
  • Antioxidant Hydramist: suited to dryness, fine lines and loss of firmness when you also want antioxidant support.
  • UltraCalming Mist: the best choice when sensitivity, visible redness or easily unsettled skin is your main concern.
  • Hyaluronic Ceramide Mist: ideal when dehydration is a priority and you want extra support for the skin's moisture barrier.

Which Dermalogica toner is right for your skin?

Dermalogica Multi Active Toner

This ultra-light facial mist is the best starting point if you simply want a refreshing everyday toner that adds hydration without making your routine feel complicated. It contains moisture-binding humectants alongside botanicals including arnica, balm mint and lavender to help leave the skin feeling fresh and comfortable after cleansing.

It is suitable for all skin types and works particularly well when skin feels dehydrated or looks dull. I also like it for combination skin that needs water-based hydration without the feel of a richer product. Use it after cleansing in the morning and evening before your serum or moisturiser, or mist it over the skin during the day whenever it feels dry or in need of refreshing.

If your main concern is sensitivity, I would choose UltraCalming Mist instead. If your skin is particularly dehydrated and you want more support for the moisture barrier, Hyaluronic Ceramide Mist is the more targeted option.

Dermalogica Antioxidant Hydramist

This lightweight hydrating mist is particularly suited to skin showing signs of ageing, including dryness, fine lines and loss of firmness. Its formula combines hydrating ingredients with antioxidant support and includes pea extract and Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, making it a good choice when you want your toner to do more than simply refresh the skin.

The finish is light rather than rich, so it layers easily underneath serum and moisturiser. Use it after cleansing morning and evening and, if required, lightly mist it over the skin during the day, including over make-up.

Choose this over Multi-Active Toner if signs of skin ageing and loss of firmness are becoming more important concerns. If dehydration and moisture barrier support are your main priorities rather than firmness, Hyaluronic Ceramide Mist may be the better match.

Dermalogica UltraCalming Mist

This soothing, lightweight mist is my first choice from the range for sensitive, reactive or easily unsettled skin. It contains Dermalogica's UltraCalming Complex with oat and botanical extracts, together with aloe, to help support skin comfort and the moisture barrier.

It is particularly useful when skin feels tight, uncomfortable or sensitive after cleansing, or when visible redness is a concern. The fragrance-free formula absorbs quickly without leaving a heavy residue, making it easy to layer underneath your serum and moisturiser.

Spray over the face, neck and chest after cleansing and gently press it into the skin before continuing with the rest of your routine. It can also be useful when skin feels temporarily unsettled following exfoliation or waxing.

If your skin is generally comfortable and you mainly want everyday hydration, Multi-Active Toner will usually be sufficient. UltraCalming Mist is the more appropriate choice when sensitivity is the reason you are selecting your toner.

Dermalogica Hyaluronic Ceramide Mist

This hydration-focused mist is a particularly good choice for dehydrated skin that feels tight, lacks suppleness or needs additional moisture barrier support. The formula combines four types of hyaluronic acid with ceramides to help the skin hold onto water and leave it feeling smoother, softer and more comfortable.

It is suitable for all skin types, so you do not need to have naturally dry skin to use it. Oily and combination complexions can also become dehydrated and may benefit from this type of lightweight water-based hydration.

Use it after cleansing before your serum and moisturiser, or mist it onto the skin whenever extra hydration is needed. If you are choosing between this and Multi-Active Toner, think about how your skin feels. Multi-Active Toner is the simpler everyday option, while Hyaluronic Ceramide Mist is better suited when dehydration and moisture retention are more noticeable concerns.

Where does toner fit into your skincare routine?

Use your toner after cleansing and before applying targeted serums and moisturiser. In the morning, finish with your chosen SPF. Dermalogica's mist format means there is usually no need for cotton wool. Close your eyes, mist evenly over the face and neck and allow the product to settle before applying the next step.

A toner can add useful hydration and help prepare freshly cleansed skin for the products that follow, but it does not replace your serum or moisturiser. Think of it as a supporting step that can be selected according to your skin type and current concerns.

Which toner should I choose?

For most skin types looking for a straightforward daily toner, I would start with Multi-Active Toner. Choose Antioxidant Hydramist when fine lines and loss of firmness are greater priorities, UltraCalming Mist when sensitivity and visible redness are your main concerns, and Hyaluronic Ceramide Mist when your skin needs more focused hydration and moisture barrier support.

Your skin can also change with the seasons, environment and the other products in your routine, so the toner that suits you best now may not always be the one you need throughout the year.
