Which Exfoliator Should I Choose?

Choosing the right Dermalogica exfoliator depends on your skin type, sensitivity, main concerns and the type of texture you prefer. Some formulas are gentle powders that can be used regularly, while others provide more intensive resurfacing for uneven texture, visible pores, dark spots or signs of skin ageing.

This guide has been written by Alexandra Echeverri, Skin Therapist and Dermalogica Expert at John And Ginger, drawing on over 30 years of hands-on treatment room experience.

Dermalogica exfoliators at a glance

  • Daily Milkfoliant: best for dry, dehydrated, sensitive or redness-prone skin.
  • Daily Microfoliant: the best all-round choice for dullness, uneven texture and a brighter-looking complexion.
  • Daily Superfoliant: suited to normal, combination or oily skin concerned with congestion, visible pores and environmental build-up.
  • Multivitamin Thermafoliant: a warming skin polisher for rough texture, dullness and visible signs of skin ageing.
  • Liquid Peelfoliant: a short-contact acid and enzyme peel for uneven tone, visible pores, fine lines and rough texture.
  • PowerBright Dark Spot Peel: a targeted peel for visible dark spots, post-blemish marks and uneven tone.
  • Phyto Nature E² Regenerating Daily Exosome Leave-On Treatment: a daily leave-on resurfacing formula for dull, uneven or ageing skin.

How do I choose the right type of exfoliator?

Powder exfoliators are mixed with water and massaged gently over the skin before rinsing. Their texture can be adjusted by adding more or less water, which makes them easy to fit into a regular skincare routine.

Multivitamin Thermafoliant has a more noticeable polishing texture and warming sensation. Liquid Peelfoliant and PowerBright Dark Spot Peel use acids and enzymes to provide more targeted resurfacing, while Phyto Nature E² is applied as a leave-on treatment before serum and moisturiser.

More exfoliation is not always better. Begin gradually, particularly if you have sensitive skin or already use retinoids, exfoliating acids or other active formulas. Reduce the frequency if your skin feels tight, dry or uncomfortable, and use daily SPF to help protect freshly exfoliated skin.

Dermalogica Daily Milkfoliant

This calming oat-based powder is my first choice when sensitivity, redness, dryness or dehydration is the main concern. It activates with water to create a soft, creamy lather that gently polishes away dull surface build-up while supporting a comfortable skin feel.

It is formulated for daily use after cleansing, although reactive skin may prefer to begin with two or three applications each week. Massage it gently over the face for around one minute before rinsing, then continue with toner, serum and moisturiser.

Choose this instead of Daily Microfoliant when soothing and moisture barrier support are more important than intensive brightening or pore refinement. It is also the most suitable starting point if previous exfoliators have felt too strong or abrasive.

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant

This rice-based powder is the best all-round choice for most skin types. It combines gentle physical polishing with enzymes and salicylic acid to help improve the appearance of dullness, uneven texture, blackheads, post-blemish marks and uneven tone.

When mixed with water, the powder forms a light, creamy foam rather than a grainy scrub. Use it after cleansing, massage gently for around one minute and rinse thoroughly. It can be used daily, although sensitive skin may prefer to begin three or four times a week.

Daily Microfoliant provides more brightening and clarifying care than Daily Milkfoliant, but is generally less intensive than Daily Superfoliant. It is a particularly useful choice when you want smoother, fresher-looking skin without moving straight to a stronger liquid peel.

Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant

This charcoal-based powder provides deeper resurfacing for normal, combination and oily skin. It is particularly suited to skin that looks dull, uneven or congested, with visible pores or surface build-up caused by oil, daily grime and environmental exposure.

Activated Binchotan charcoal, exfoliating enzymes and alpha hydroxy acids help refine the appearance of texture, while niacinamide and botanical extracts support a clearer, more balanced-looking finish. Mix the powder with water, massage gently for up to one minute and rinse thoroughly.

It can be used daily, but alternate-day use is a better starting point if your skin is sensitive or new to exfoliation. Choose this instead of Daily Microfoliant when visible pores, congestion and a more intensive resurfacing effect are your main priorities. Very sensitive or compromised skin will usually be better suited to Daily Milkfoliant.

Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermafoliant

This warming skin polisher combines fine resurfacing particles with lactic acid, salicylic acid and retinol. It is suited to skin that feels rough or looks dull and uneven, particularly where visible signs of skin ageing are also a concern.

The formula warms when it comes into contact with water and has a more noticeable polishing texture than the powder exfoliators. Apply it after cleansing to damp skin, massage gently for one to two minutes and rinse thoroughly. Use it two or three times a week rather than every day.

Choose this when you enjoy the feel of a traditional exfoliating polish and want an immediately smoother finish. Daily Microfoliant will usually be more suitable for frequent use, while Liquid Peelfoliant may be preferable if you want acid-based exfoliation without a textured scrub.

Dermalogica Liquid Peelfoliant

This lightweight liquid peel is suited to customers who want more intensive resurfacing for rough texture, visible pores, uneven tone and the appearance of fine lines. Its blend of alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acid, polyhydroxy acid and enzymes works across different layers of the skin's surface.

Apply one dropper to clean, dry skin, avoiding the eye and lip areas. Leave it on for one to three minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Begin with two or three applications a week or every other day, then increase only if your skin remains comfortable.

This is a stronger choice than the daily powder exfoliators and is particularly suited to customers who already have some experience with exfoliating acids. Avoid using it in the same routine as another intensive peel or exfoliator, and follow with moisturiser and daytime SPF.

Dermalogica PowerBright Dark Spot Peel

This targeted cream-to-mask peel is intended for visible dark spots, post-blemish marks and uneven skin tone. Mandelic acid and a blend of AHA and PHA exfoliants help lift dull surface build-up, while tranexamic acid and niacinamide support a clearer, more even-looking complexion.

Apply a thin, even layer to clean skin, avoiding the eye and lip areas, and leave it on for approximately 15 minutes before rinsing. Current Dermalogica directions recommend beginning with daily use for four to five days, followed by two or three applications a week. Always follow the directions supplied with your product.

Choose this when pigmentation and uneven tone are your main concerns rather than general dullness or rough texture. Daily Microfoliant is the more versatile everyday option, while this peel provides a focused step within a brightening routine. Consistent daytime SPF is particularly important when working on the appearance of dark spots.

Dermalogica Phyto Nature E² Exosome Leave-On Treatment

This lightweight, silky leave-on treatment takes a different approach to exfoliation. It uses exfoliating enzymes and botanical ingredients to support natural surface renewal while targeting dullness, uneven texture, fine lines and other visible signs of skin ageing.

Apply it to clean skin as the first leave-on step in your routine and allow it to absorb before applying your usual serum and moisturiser. It can be used morning and evening, followed by SPF during the day.

Choose this when you want ongoing daily resurfacing without using a rinse-off powder, scrub or short-contact peel. It is especially suited to mature or ageing skin concerned with texture, brightness and firmness. As it remains on the skin, introduce it gradually before adding another regular exfoliator to the same routine.

Which Dermalogica exfoliator is best for most people?

Daily Microfoliant is the best starting point for most customers because it suits a wide range of skin types and concerns. It helps with dullness, uneven texture, visible congestion and uneven tone while remaining easy to adjust according to your skin's needs.

Choose Daily Milkfoliant if your skin is dry, sensitive or redness-prone. Choose Daily Superfoliant if your skin is oilier, more congested or concerned with visible pores. The remaining formulas are more targeted choices for rough texture, intensive resurfacing, dark spots or visible signs of skin ageing.

Where does an exfoliator fit into my skincare routine?

Rinse-off powders, scrubs and peels are normally used after cleansing and before toner, serum and moisturiser. Phyto Nature E² is different because it is left on and applied as the first treatment step after cleansing.

Avoid applying several intensive exfoliating formulas together simply because they target similar concerns. A consistent routine using one suitable exfoliator at the right frequency is often more comfortable and easier to maintain than alternating several strong products.

Do not apply exfoliators to irritated, sunburnt or damaged skin. Reduce use if you notice persistent dryness or discomfort and seek personalised advice if you are unsure how exfoliation should fit alongside your existing products.
