Preparation
Shower using the body scrub, and dry off thoroughly. Be careful, with regards to the products you use to clean & exfoliate the skin, as some products can leave behind a film of oil or lotion, which can act as a barrier to the tanning ingredient. Do not apply moisturisers prior to the application of tan - it will dilute and diminish the affect of the self-tanner.
Legs
Start by applying self-tan in a circular motion to thighs, blending down lightly over knees and then in a circular motion again, around calves. Blend a small amount of the self-tanner in a downward motion over feet; be sure to blend around ankles. A good tip, when applying to hands or feet, is to use cosmetic sponge or cotton wool pads, which gives a very smooth application.
Chest and Back
Using a circular motion again blend the self-tanner over stomach, chest, and as far around back as you can reach. If you want to tan your whole back cut off a piece of cling film 1 ½ feet long and fold over to make a long strip. Apply dots of tanner to the strip and then use to smooth over back. Blend tanner over shoulders and down arms ending at the wrist. Keep arms bent so that self-tanner distributes evenly over elbows.
Hands/Feet
Rinse off hands with warm water and bar soap (bar soap is more concentrated than liquid soaps) wash hands for one full minute to break down the colour. There should be no colour left between fingers. That is part of the reason why instant colour tanners make it easier to get an even tan you can see if you didn’t finish washing it all off your hands, unlike colourless formulas. A scrub brush will take off any excess from you palms and assure that nails aren’t stained. Dry hands off thoroughly using a dark towel. For best results, wait at least ten minutes, to make sure hands are totally dry before you apply the tan.
Apply a small amount of tanner to the backs of hands and blend with a cotton wool pad or makeup sponge. You can apply a bit of lotion to feet, hands and elbows after about 15 minutes to make sure they tan lightly.

Extra Hints and Tips for the Perfect Tan
- All self-tanners wear more quickly off the face, throat, feet and hands because the skin is thinner here and it naturally exfoliates much faster. Tan on the face, throat, feet and hands should be reapplied about every 2-3days. Most people can apply a Xen-Tan dark tanning product once a week and then their Tan Extender once a week to deepen the colour. However, if people require a real deep, dark tan than they often apply more than one coat of dark tanning product to the entire body, per week.
- Usually Tan Extender should be applied about 3 days after applying your dark tanner to make your colour last longer (it extends the life of your tan by about 3 or 4 days) You must wash your hands after using Tan Extender as it has tanning ingredients in it.
- Although it is personal reference, we recommend with Xen-Tan, that it be applied without gloves (Latex gloves can make the tanner grab in places and make it hard to get a smooth application, making the process a little difficult). However Vinyl gloves, give a smooth application, and are great for applying Xen-Tan. Even though the colour is dark on the hands immediately after application it can be washed off without damaging nails or manicure. One minute with warm water and bar soap does the trick.
After tanning...
Go about your normal activities (don’t do anything that will make you perspire, such as go to the gym, sunbathe or swim) and let XEN-TAN do the work for you.
In 3-4 hours you will begin to develop a healthy, beautiful, long lasting tan that can last up to 10 days. You can tan before bed if you require, or wait 15 minutes after tanning to dress.
When you take your first-shower to wash the initial colour-guide off, just wash with water, and only use shower gel or soap in the areas needed. After this initial shower it’s fine to go back to your normal washing routine. However, as we don’t know the ingredients of the body cleansers you use, we do recommend the Xen-Tan Gentle Body Scrub, which won’t break up your colour and in turn make your tan last a lot longer.
Xen-Tan self-tanner washes out of most fabrics but we always suggest wearing darker colours whilst your tan is developing. To prolong the life of your tan, Tan Extender should be applied 2-3 days after the application of your dark tanning product.

How does XEN-TAN stop you from turning orange?
Here's the science bit - People who tan easily in the sun have an olive undertone to their skin, not an orange one. Older type self-tans use an unnatural orange tone meant to mimic a tan. XEN-TAN uses a more olive undertone that looks realistic and deep, on even the fairest tones. All Sunless tanning products have the same active ingredient DHA.
